Mourne Mountains
Unlike the rest of Co. Down the Mournes are built of granite, a hard tough rock with a grainy appearance. It contains few natural minerals and develops a thin peaty topsoil which only supports plants such as heather and certain grasses that can live in acidic conditions.

In Celtic times Manannan Mac Lir was regarded as the Irish Neptune. Local people believe that his sprit is released during fierce storms and are still heard to remark “Manannan is angry today”
